In a significant move toward addressing the long-pending demands of the Koraga tribal community, a delegation from the Dakshina Kannada District Koraga Association held a consultative meeting with Revenue Minister Krishna Byre Gowda at his office in Vikasa Soudha.
The delegation submitted a memorandum urging the government to expedite the allotment of agricultural land that has already been identified across various taluks in Dakshina Kannada for the benefit of the Koraga community.
Speaking at the meeting, Minister Krishna Byre Gowda assured the representatives that the matter would be taken up in consultation with senior officials of the district administration and the revenue department. He emphasized that past procedures for granting land to the Koragas would be reviewed and appropriate steps would be taken soon.
Highlighting the social and economic vulnerability of the Koragas, who are classified as a Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Group (PVTG), Dakshina Kannada District Koraga Association President Sundara Beluvai appealed to the minister to allot land in clusters of 10 to 15 families, to allow the community to maintain their traditional lifestyle and build self-sufficient settlements.
Tulu Sahitya Academy President Taranath Gatti Kapikad briefed the minister on the history and present challenges of the Koraga community. Beary Sahitya Academy President Umar U.H., Vice-President Kogga Ramesh, and General Secretary Shashikala, along with other office-bearers of the association, were also present at the meeting.
