Chinese President Xi Jinping told Vladimir Putin on Thursday that Beijing would stand with Moscow against “hegemonic bullying” as the two leaders met in the Kremlin ahead of Russia’s Victory Day celebrations . Emphasising their joint stance in the face of Western pressure, Xi said China and Russia would shoulder “the special responsibilities of major world powers.” Putin, for his part, underlined that their deepening ties were not aimed at confrontation with others. “We are developing our ties for the benefit of the peoples of both countries and are not opposed to anyone,” he told Xi at the start of their talks in Moscow, where the Chinese leader is visiting ahead of major events marking 80 years since the defeat of Nazi Germany.
Putin welcomed Xi as “our main guest”, emphasising their countries’ strategic partnership and shared stance on global issues. “Together with our Chinese friends we firmly stand on guard of historical truth, protect the memory of events of the war years and counter modern manifestations of neo-Nazism and militarism,” Putin said, accusing the West of distorting the history of WWII.
Xi praised the deepening trust between Beijing and Moscow, saying political ties had grown stronger. Both leaders highlighted their cooperation as a counterweight to Western influence, stressing that their partnership benefits their people and is not aimed at any third party.
Xi’s visit comes as Russia hosts leaders from Brazil, Serbia, Venezuela, Vietnam, and several African and post-Soviet states for Friday’s Victory Day parade on Red Square. The gathering contrasts with earlier post-Soviet parades that drew Western leaders. This year’s guest list reflects a shift towards the Global South and nations critical of Western policies. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said it showed Russia “not only has allies, but a large number of countries that feel close to the spirit of our ideology and world vision.”
