'New candidate?' Trump asks after FBI reveals Iran hackers shared data with Biden

Former President and Republican candidate Donald Trump reacted strongly to reports that Iranian hackers attempted to interfere in the 2024 election by spying on his campaign and sharing information with Kamala Harris 's team.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump said, "Wow, just out! the FBI caught Iran spying on my campaign, and giving all of the information to the Kamala Harris campaign." He continued, "therefore she and her campaign were illegally spying on me,” and labeled the situation as "the Iran, Iran, Iran case!" Trump questioned whether Harris would “resign in disgrace from politics” and asked if the "communist left" would choose a new candidate to replace her.

The FBI on Wednesday said that Iranian hackers sent unsolicited emails to associates of President Joe Biden’s campaign, including excerpts from materials stolen from Trump's campaign. The emails, sent in late June and early July, aimed to entice Biden's team with the leaked information, though the FBI noted that there is no evidence of responses from the recipients.

Harris's campaign called the emails as “unwelcome and unacceptable malicious activity,” claiming they were largely ignored as spam.

Trump's campaign reported the hack on August 10, revealing that sensitive internal documents had been leaked to several media outlets, including Politico and The New York Times. Intelligence officials suggest Iran is targeting US politics to influence candidates it views as threats to its national interests.

The Iranian mission to the United Nations has denied the allegations, asserting no motive to interfere in US elections. Both Biden's and Trump’s campaigns have reported implementing strong cybersecurity measures in response to the incident. Harris's campaign confirmed it had not faced any successful breaches and is cooperating with law enforcement regarding the attempted hack.
