NEW DELHI: Justice Sanjiv Khanna, who is currently a Supreme Court judge, will take charge as Chief Justice of India (CJI) on November 11 this year.
Justice Khanna will succeed CJI DY Chandrachud , who is serving as the country's 50th chief justice.
Last week, CJI Chandrachud had formally proposed Justice Sanjiv Khanna, the second-most senior judge of the Supreme Court, as his successor.
In a communication to the Union government , CJI Chandrachud stated that since he is demitting office on November 10, Justice Khanna would be his successor.
"In exercise of the power conferred by the Constitution of India , Hon’ble President, after consultation with Hon’ble Chief Justice of India, is pleased to appoint Shri Justice Sanjiv Khanna, Judge of the Supreme Court of India as Chief Justice of India with effect from 11th November, 2024," Union law minister Arun Ram Meghwal posted on X.
Who is Justice Sanjiv Khanna?
Born on May 14, 1960, Justice Khanna enrolled as an advocate with the Bar Council of Delhi in 1983 and initially practised at the district courts at the Tis Hazari complex, and later in the high court of Delhi and tribunals.
He was elevated as an additional Judge of the Delhi high court in 2005 and was made a permanent judge in 2006. Justice Khanna was elevated as a Judge of the Supreme Court on January 18, 2019.
