Odisha remains alert to tackle water-borne diseases, snake bites in cyclone/flood affected districts

BHUBANESWAR: Health department on Saturday alerted officials of three districts, Bhadrak, Balasore and Kendrapada, to keep an eye on the health-related issues post Cyclone . Under the influence of cyclone Dana, many places in these districts received heavy rainfall on Friday and Saturday causing flood like situation.

Bhadrak and Balasore districts have been especially affected by the heavy rain. Many villages were surrounded by flood water. To tackle water-borne diseases and other health related issues including snake bites during this situation, public health director Nilakantha Mishra said necessary steps have been taken for implementation of public health measures, monitoring trend of diseases and coping up with any situation arising out of heavy rainfall.

Mobile health teams consisting of a medical officer and paramedics will be mobilised from district headquarters hospital or non-affected areas in the district for deployment in the flood/cyclone affected areas. Drugs, logistics and disinfectants have been supplied to use in the affected areas, said Mishra.

He said safe drinking water can prevent water-borne disease in cyclone/flood affected areas. “Our health workers have already started disinfecting the water sources by using bleaching powder. Halogen tablets have been given to people to check contamination in drinking water. Our team will also conduct water analysis of different sources to avoid any public health issues in the affected areas,” he added.

He said disease surveillance teams have been asked to look after the symptoms of people in the cyclone/flood affected people. Diarrhoea, dysentery, fever and snake bites are the major issues among the disaster affected people. “We have asked our teams to make people aware about snake bites and its treatment. People should not take help of sorcerers or black magic practitioners to treat snake bite patients,” he added.

Mishra said the epidemiological situation of communicable diseases after cyclone/flood will be analysed daily at block, district and state-level to take immediate measures for containment of the diseases. Various healthcare services have been provided at cyclone shelters in Balasore. Health check ups have been conducted at different affected areas in the three districts, said the officer.

Health department has conducted a review of the flood situation in Bhadrak and Balasore and remained alert to provide health services to people at the time of need.

To ensure healthy personal hygiene practices, the Health Department distributed sanitary napkins under the Khusi scheme at cyclone shelters in the affected districts. ASHA workers and ANMs distribute these sanitary napkins to women and girls in cyclone or flood-affected areas, said the official sources.
