NEW DELHI: Post its Zanzibar campus, in a major move towards international expansion, the Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT-M) is set to open a flagship Centre in Dubai in early 2025. Specialising in cutting-edge fields such as artificial intelligence (AI), data science, robotics, and sustainable energy, the Centre will focus on research, innovation , and entrepreneurship , while creating a new link between India and Dubai’s entrepreneurial ecosystems.

This first international Centre in Dubai for the IIT follows an agreement signed between it and the Dubai Department of Economy and Tourism (DET) during GITEX Global by Hadi Badri, CEO of the Dubai Economic Development Corporation, and professor Raghunathan Rengaswamy, dean of Global Engagement at IIT-M. This Centre will operate under the newly created entity, IITM-Global.

The Centre is envisaged to advance key technologies, including AI, data science, robotics, and sustainable energy—fields aligned with Dubai's strategic economic goals under the Dubai Economic Agenda (D33), which aims to double the size of Dubai’s economy by 2033. The IITM-Global Dubai Centre will serve as a bridge to India’s thriving entrepreneurial scene while supporting the global scale-up of deep-tech startups.

Hadi Badri said: "This partnership represents an important milestone to position Dubai as a global leader in research, innovation, and entrepreneurship, building on IIT-M’s global reputation to drive advancements in AI, robotics, and sustainable energy."

Rengaswamy said: "The launch of IITM Global’s first international Centre in Dubai is a pivotal moment in our vision to expand IIT Madras’ global footprint.”

The agreement aims to advance research and development, promote innovation, and support entrepreneurship through strategic partnerships with local and global institutions. The Centre will also provide upskilling opportunities by leveraging IIT-M’s expertise in collaboration with Dubai’s higher education institutions.

At GITEX Global, IIT-M showcased 12 deep-tech startups, highlighting the institute's commitment to fostering innovation and entrepreneurship.

The new Centre will also collaborate with the Dubai Future Foundation and other key stakeholders to further Dubai’s R&D priorities and attract global tech businesses. This partnership builds on the strong economic and social ties between Dubai and India, which has seen a growing number of Indian businesses and visitors contributing to Dubai's economy.
