3 more fugitives held for Mhow rape, assault on Armymen

The remaining three fugitives in the attack on Army officers and gang rape of one of their friends were arrested Friday after a three-day manhunt in the jungles near Mhow. "Cops carried out a late-night operation in which the remaining accused - Rohit Singh Girwal, Sandeep Singh Wariya, and Sachin Makwana, were nabbed," said DIG Nimish Agarwal.

Horrific as it is, the Jam Gate gang-rape is part of a pattern of sexual abuse of couples in picnic spots around Indore. Gangs go around targeting couples who seek seclusion in such areas, looting and raping them. One such gang admitted to 45 gang rapes. Police say the number of victims would be staggeringly high but very few cases are ever reported as the women fear public shaming. In most cases, they don't even want their parents to know that they were secretly meeting a man, say police. Scenic spots around Indore, like Patalpani, Bamnia Kund, Kajligarh Fort, Choral and now Jam Gate, are hunting grounds for such gangs.

"The accused said they had gone with motive to loot but couldn't get enough cash, hence they sent one of the officers to fetch money," said DIG Agarwal. Cops suspect the accused had committed similar crimes earlier too, which went unreported.
