With the Philadelphia Phillies performing quite okay this season, manager Rob Thomson seems to be in a tricky position. Brandon Marsh , the Phillies center fielder , is not having a good season and it seems to be affecting the Phillies’ performance. Due to this, Thomson has decided to bench Brandon.
But, how long will Thomson bench Marsh? And if Marsh is going to get benched for a prolonged period, who will be his replacement? We have some answers here.
Brandon Marsh on struggling with left-handersIt seems like Brandon Marsh’s hitting problem started when he faced left-handers in the game. The once-upon-a-time great hitter of Phillies, who had a hitting average of .277 in 2023, is now struggling at an average of .100 in just 40 at-bats.
Besides, it seems like the curse of left-handers has stretched, leading Marsh to simply struggle to hit the ball. In the 2025 MLB season, Marsh has only managed to hit one home run, 4 hits, and just 5 RBIs, stats that speak volumes on how the hitter’s performance is degrading day by day.
However, the Phillies manager took the wise decision of benching Marsh for three games. When asked about his decision, Thomson replied,
"Just to give him a blow, a mental, physical blow. He’s thinking about it quite a bit right now. Everybody goes through it at some point. I just thought that maybe giving him a day or two off, and just let him watch for a minute."
How is Marsh holding up? Well, it seems like the hitter is seeing the positive side of the situation and taking it as an opportunity to reset and come back stronger.
"The game is very, very tough. It’ll bring you down, break you down, and bring you up when you least expect it. So I just gotta keep a positive mindset,” said Brandon.

But, is Rojas doing what is expected of him? With just 16 at-bats, Rojas has managed to achieve a hitting average of .250, had four hits, and four RBIs. However, it seems that Rojas is also struggling to maintain his ground on the field.
In the last game between the Philadelphia Phillies and San Francisco Giants, Rojas had three at-bats and was struck out in each of them. His poor performance did not go unnoticed by fans and reporters. When asked about Rojas’ performance, Thomson replied,
“Just a little bit over-aggressive, over-swinging a little bit.”
With Marsh on the bench and Rojas struggling with his swing capabilities, it seems the Phillies might have to look for a third option if this continues.
