July 4 fireworks blast injures Najee Harris and several others in California neighborhood

Los Angeles Chargers running back Najee Harris suffered a minor eye injury during a Fourth of July fireworks accident in Antioch, California, that turned a neighborhood celebration into a scene of chaos. Though Harris is expected to make a full recovery in time for the NFL season, the explosion sent shockwaves through the community, injuring multiple people and sending at least one man to the hospital in critical condition.

Fireworks mishap turns dangerous in Najee Harris’ hometown

The blast occurred shortly after midnight on July 5, near an apartment complex in Antioch, Harris’ hometown and where he attended high school. According to authorities, a high-powered firework exploded unexpectedly, injuring six adult men and a 13-year-old boy. One man lost multiple fingers and was taken to the hospital in serious condition.

Harris, who was in the area during the incident, sustained what’s being described as a “superficial eye injury.” He was treated at John Muir Hospital in Concord before being transferred to Stanford Hospital as a precaution.

Harris' agent confirms he’ll be ready for the season

NFL insider Adam Schefter reported the update via Harris’ agent, Doug Hendrickson, who reassured fans that the injury is not expected to interfere with the running back’s football schedule.

“Najee sustained a superficial eye injury during the incident, but is fully expected to be ready for the upcoming NFL season,” Hendrickson said.

The 26-year-old recently signed a one-year deal with the Chargers, worth up to $9.25 million, after spending four seasons with the Pittsburgh Steelers. He’s expected to play a key role in Los Angeles' revamped offense this year.

While Harris appears to have escaped with minor injuries, the same can’t be said for others at the scene. The man who lost fingers was among the worst affected, and the full extent of the other victims' injuries has not been publicly disclosed.

Authorities have launched an investigation into the fireworks incident, including whether illegal explosives were involved. Both the Antioch Police Department and the Contra Costa Fire Protection District are leading the inquiry.

For Harris, who’s known for giving back to his Antioch community and frequently returning to his hometown, this incident could’ve been far worse. Fortunately, he avoided serious harm—and now, all eyes turn back to football.

But for the others injured, the long recovery ahead is a painful reminder of how quickly celebrations can turn tragic.
