NEW DELHI: India’s campaign to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games has taken a decisive step forward, with a high-level delegation from Commonwealth Sport completing a three-day inspection of Ahmedabad’s sporting infrastructure.
The delegation, led by Darren Hall , Director of Games & Assurance at Commonwealth Sport, arrived in Gujarat’s capital on Tuesday to assess proposed venues and hold meetings with state officials. The visit follows India’s formal expression of interest to host the prestigious multi-sport event.

“Had an engaging discussion today with Darren Hall, Christian Napier (Director of AI, State of Utah), and senior IOA official Lt Gen Harpal Singh (retd) on the future of the Commonwealth Union,” Gujarat Minister of State for Sports Harsh Sanghavi posted on X. He said the talks revolved around collaboration, innovation, and strengthening global sporting ties.
India’s bid has gained momentum since Canada withdrew from the race last month. While the initial expression of interest is in, the final bid proposal must be submitted by August 31.
The host city will be announced in November during the General Assembly of Commonwealth Sport in Glasgow, UK.
“The host selection will be based on sustainability, athletic excellence, and regional appeal. There also needs to be flexibility in terms of the host nation’s capabilities,” explained Lt Gen Singh, an IOA executive member and part of Commonwealth Sport’s Sports Committee.
Over three days, the inspection team met with Gujarat government officials and toured multiple venues across Ahmedabad, assessing stadiums, training facilities, accommodation, and transport infrastructure.
If successful, this would mark India’s second time hosting, after the 2010 Games in Delhi.
