Jackson Merrill, the 21-year old center fielder from Baltimore, is making headlines again, and this time it’s not because of his marvelous performance on the field, but of his recent contract with the San Diego Padres. The shocking thing is, that the young talented player has shaken hands with the Padres for nine years on a $135 Million deal.

Diving deeper into Jackson Merrill’s $135 million contractAs per the contract, Merrill will get a total of $135 Million throughout his tenure of nine years. On top of that, the center fielder is also going to get a $10 Million signing bonus. The amount mentioned in the contract is on top of his existing one-year pre-arbitration contract of $809,500.



Breaking down the amount, Merrill will get approximately $15 Million per year till the 2034 season, after which the player has a club option of $30 Million for the tenth season. Besides, the contract has tons of escalators which can increase its worth to $204 Million.

Escalators worth $30 Million present in Jackson Merrill’s contractWhen Merrill first made his MLB debut with the Padres, he was signed for a one-year contract worth $740,000. Currently, Merrill’s contract contains escalators worth $30 Million which is completely based on 500 plate appearances.


Breaking down the complexities, Merrill will get an additional $5 Million per year from 2026 to 2029, as per the escalator conditions. From 2030 to 2034, the $5 Million will be distributed in descending order. During this period, there will be a $1 Million increase in the center fielder’s salary.

The result of his brilliance reflected when he received the Silver Slugger and NL All-Star in his debut year. On top of that, he was the runner-up for the rookie of the year award.


Looking at his 2024 performance, Merrill had a batting average of .291, with 24 home runs, 90 RBI, 16 stolen bases, and .326 on-base performance, all in just 156 games. The 2025 season has just begun, and Jackson is showing why he’s the star player of the Padres. He has already made one home run, achieved a batting average of .400, and 6 RBIs, in just six games.
