SURAT: The bodies of a 40-year-old man, his wife and son were recovered from the Tapi river on Friday, from under Galteshwar Bridge near Timba village. The police investigation found that the couple had killed themselves and their son. Relatives told police the family had been in a financial crisis.
The bodies of Vipul Devganiya, his wife Sarita (38), and their son Vraj (12) were retrieved by police and firefighters and sent for postmortems. The postmortems found that all three had died of drowning.
"No use of force or poison was found in the death of Vraj, and no separate complaint will be lodged for his death," a police official said. It remains a mystery how the parents convinced Vraj to jump into the river.
In his complaint, Vipul's brother, Bhavesh, told police that Vipul left home with Sarita and Vraj on Thursday evening on his motorcycle. They told him they were going for an outing and would return after dinner. When they weren't back till late at night, the family started searching for them.
On Friday, Kamrej police were alerted to the body of a woman in the Tapi. A fire team retrieved the body, and the bodies of Vipul and Vraj were found later. Police also found the motorcycle and shoes of the three on Galteshwar Bridge. Police suspect they jumped off the bridge.
"Bhavesh told police that Vipul had borrowed Rs 8 lakh and invested in stocks. He suffered losses and was unable to repay the loan. Sarita was suffering from some mental problems. For these reasons, Vipul was under pressure," a police official said.
Police found that Vipul used to do petty jobs and occasionally worked as a diamond artisan. As he did not have a permanent job, he had trouble repaying the loan. The family lived in the Chowk Bazaar area of the city. They were from Gundarni village in Bhavnagar.
