Congress rally in Nagpur condemns communal violence & ED actions against Sonia & Rahul Gandhi

NAGPUR: Thousands of Congress supporters and senior leaders marched through the heart of Nagpur on Wednesday in a “Sadbhavana Shanti March,” calling for communal unity, institutional accountability, and an end to what they described as politically motivated persecution of opposition figures.

The rally, marked by visits to Deekshabhoomi, Tajbagh Dargah and Tekdi Ganesh Temple, drew a strong crowd amid rising concerns over last month’s riots in Mahal and growing unease over the state’s socio-political trajectory.

Leading the protest were AICC in-charge Ramesh Chennithala, MPCC chief Harshvardhan Sapkal, CLP leader Vijay Wadettiwar, and a host of senior Congress figures including Manikrao Thakare, Nitin Raut, Sunil Kedar, Anees Ahmed, and Kunal Choudhary. The march culminated at Rajwada Palace following a route through key city areas associated with last month’s violence, which erupted over contentious social media messages linked to Mughal emperor Aurangzeb.

Chennithala squarely blamed the BJP-led Mahayuti alliance for escalating communal divisions and misusing central agencies. He alleged that Congress leaders Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi were being targeted by the Enforcement Directorate in cases driven by political vendetta. “Modi’s government is using ED and CBI to silence those who speak truth to power. But the Congress party will not bend, nor will its workers be cowed,” he said.

Sapkal accused the state government of orchestrating riots to distract from policy failures. “While people are reeling under economic and social pressure, the Mahayuti government is busy fanning communal fires. Behind this chaos, land is being handed to corporates, resources diverted, and dissent criminalised,” he said.

Wadettiwar went a step further, citing recent Supreme Court remarks as proof of administrative collapse. “This government bulldozed the home of a riot accused without due process. Now its officers are seeking forgiveness in court. Ministers are making hate speeches, even threatening to storm religious sites, and the chief minister remains silent. Maharashtra has never seen such constitutional decay,” he said.

The rally was also a platform to denounce the state’s ‘Laadki Bahin’ scheme, which Congress leaders termed a betrayal of economically vulnerable women. They criticised the reduction in benefits under existing schemes and called for a policy shift toward inclusive, secular governance. The event concluded with a public meeting reaffirming the party’s commitment to upholding constitutional values, social justice, and peaceful coexistence.
