JAIPUR: Heatwave conditions aggravated in the state Friday, with many places recording maximum temperatures above 41 degrees Celsius. Churu and Sriganganagar were the hottest, reaching 45.4 degrees Celsius.

Jaipur experienced its hottest morning and afternoon of the season so far.

More than 21 districts were under severe heatwave conditions, with an average rise of almost four degrees in both maximum and minimum temperatures. The Met office attributed the continued rise in temperatures to active upper air cyclonic circulation and northerly winds.

However, minor relief was likely on Saturday and Sunday.

People in Jaipur woke up to the hottest morning of the season, with a minimum temperature of 28.0 degrees Celsius, almost 4.7 degrees above normal. This was followed by the hottest afternoon of the season, with a maximum temperature of 43.5 degrees Celsius, nearly 5.7 degrees above normal. This was also the hottest afternoon in April in Jaipur since 2022 when it recorded 43.3 degrees Celsius.

Roads were almost empty in the afternoon as people stayed indoors. Those outside sought cold beverages, including soft drinks, sugarcane and other juices, to beat the heat. Sawai Man Singh (SMS) Hospital and other satellite hospitals in the city saw a significant number of patients with diarrhoea, vomiting, and dehydration.

Heatwave conditions have also seen water crisis in many villages and hamlets across the state, including in Barmer, Jaisalmer, Dausa, Karauli, Phalodi, Bikaner and some parts of the Churu district in the state. Even in the capital, some of the localities are depending on private water tankers that are charging from Rs 400 to Rs 700 to fully fill a tank. Some places in Jaisalmer, Bikaner and Barmer witnessed dust storms in the afternoon, which also experienced maximum temperatures of above 42.0 degree Celsius.

The Met office predicted dust storms and mild showers in some parts of Bikaner, Bharatpur, and Jaipur divisions of the state, although temperatures are still expected to rise. Some places are likely to see above 45 degree Celsius.
