Jaipur: In a display of cultural pride and historical appreciation, Jaipur's iconic monuments transformed into vibrant cultural hubs Friday, as the Pink City celebrated the International Day of Monuments and Sites, also known as World Heritage Day.
The city's architectural treasures, from the majestic Hawa Mahal to the scientific marvel of Jantar Mantar, opened their doors free of charge, welcoming visitors with traditional Rajasthani warmth. Colourful rangoli designs adorned entrances, while guests received traditional tilak and garlands, creating an atmosphere of festive celebration.
"At Hawa Mahal, we decorated the entrance with rangoli and greeted tourists with tilak to celebrate the occasion," shared Sarojini Chanchalani, superintendent of the monument. The historic structure became a stage for traditional folk performances, including the dynamic Kachi Ghodi dance and enchanting puppet shows.
The day proved particularly significant for education, as local schools seized the opportunity to organize field trips. Sangeeta Saini, principal of a private school in Chomu, emphasised the educational value: "Since the tickets are free, this is a unique opportunity for students to learn about our art, culture, architecture, civilisation and historical weaponry."
International visitors also found themselves immersed in the cultural experience. Australian tourists Emily (26) and Sarah (27) were moved by the traditional welcome they received at Jantar Mantar. "This morning, we were greeted with tilak and a garland. It was special to experience the culture of Rajasthan on this day," Sarah remarked.
The celebrations extended beyond mere entertainment, incorporating educational elements through street plays that highlighted the importance of monument preservation and cleanliness. The Albert Hall Museum, another architectural gem, joined the festivities with its own cultural programmes.
