Agra: A 50-year-old man allegedly strangled his relative to death over gold earrings in Daulatpur village of Muzaffarnagar district, police said on Tuesday.
The victim, Saroj Devi, 65, went missing on Friday morning after going to the fields to collect fodder. When she failed to return and could not be found, her family filed a missing person's report at Sikhera police station.
During the investigation, police scanned village CCTV footage and found suspicious visuals of Saroj's relative Bhanwar Singh, carrying a large sack on a motorcycle. When questioned, Singh confessed to killing Saroj. He had stuffed the body in a sack and dumped it in a canal near Sardhana in Meerut district.
Police launched a search operation with divers and recovered the body from the canal on Monday. Police sent the body for post-mortem and registered a case against the accused under BNS section 103 (Murder).
SP (City) Satyanasrayan Prajapat said, "After receiving a police complaint, we started the investigation, during which CCTV footage was reviewed where a suspect was seen carrying a sack on his bike. Upon identifying the individual, Bhanwar Singh was detained. He admitted to killing Saroj, after which he was sent to jail. Further investigation is on."
