Agra: Moments away from ‘varmala', bride Doli Kumari, 21, called off her marriage after Amod Kumar, 25, the groom, turned up drunk and started abusing her and her family in front of guests. Hurt and taken aback by her would-be-husband's conduct, Doli refused to take things any further. When the elderly from both sides tried to intervene, she bluntly said, "He has come to the wedding drunk. What will he do in the future?"
The incident took place at Basantpur village in UP's Mainpuri on Thursday night. Locals said the ‘baraat' arrived from a village in Shahjahanpur. The hosts warmly welcomed Amod, his family and ‘baraatis'. There was a lot of enthusiasm with dancing and music.
However, it was all shortlived. The traditional ‘dwarchaar' ritual at the entrance went well. And after a while, when Doli and her family were getting ready for the ‘varmala' on stage, the tipsy groom got up, walked randomly "left and right" and somehow climbed up the stairs to the platform, nearly falling over the bride's relatives. He also verbally abused Doli and her kin, locals pointed out.
For Doli, it was all over. She left the stage in disgust. Soon, there was palpable tension at the venue with some of the groom's relatives and guests calling it an "insult". But, Doli remained adamant. Things escalated and reached the doorstep of the local thana in Kishani, where the cops tried to make them reconcile.
At the police station, talks continued till early in the morning. Her family said though they fulfilled all the demands by the groom's side, the latter turned up "drunk" and created a scene in front of others.
DSP of Mainpuri, Sachidanand Singh, said on Friday, "The groom had to return to Shahjahanpur without his bride. As of now, no formal complaint has been lodged by either party."
