James Gunn is set to give Krypto its first live-action appearance in his upcoming big film, Superman. The Superdog, who debuted in DC's Adventure Comics #210 way back in March 1955, will now be arriving on the big screen, a glimpse of which fans got to see in a social media post by the writer-director.
James Gunn debuts KryptoGunn on Tuesday, released the first look of Krypto sitting with David Corenswet's Superman, both facing their backs to the camera. He revealed the photo in honour of October being the 'Adopt a Shelter Dog' month. Along with the picture, Gunn also shared a long post revealing how Krypto was inspired by his own rescue dog Ozu who was adopted by the filmmaker and his wife soon after he started writing Superman. Krypto was inspired by our dog Ozu, who we adopted shortly after I started writing Superman. Ozu, who came from a hoarding situation in a backyard with 60 other dogs & never knew human beings, was problematic to say the least. He immediately came in & destroyed our home, our shoes, our furniture - he even ate my laptop. It took a long time before he would even let us touch him."The director further added how Ozu not just changed their lives, but even the direction of the film. "I remember thinking, “Gosh, how difficult would life be if Ozu had superpowers?” - and thus Krypto came into the script & changed the shape of the story as Ozu was changing my life. What better time to debut the not-so-good-good-boy Krypto than #AdoptAShelterDog month. Btw, Ozu today, is, fairly often, a very good boy. #Superman," Gunn said.
