NFL analyst Michael Strahan has been swept up in a wave of controversy for his recent actions during the national anthem, leading him to express deep respect and gratitude towards veterans and active service members.

A regular on Fox NFL Sunday, Strahan faced backlash after not placing his hand over his heart alongside his colleagues while at the San Diego Naval Base before Veterans Day.

With military personnel all around, the scene was set for a display of homage as the Star Spangled Banner played, yet Strahan stood out for refraining from the usual gesture. Soon after this incident, which hit a nerve with some viewers before the day's NFL clashes, the revered New York Giants star felt the sting of public disapproval.

Strahan tackled his critics head-on with a heartfelt message on social media, the former Super Bowl champion shared a photo of his father, who served in the military, on Instagram stories.

His message was clear and emphatic as he articulated his honour for veterans and military figures, saying: "Thank you to all veterans and active service members who courageously risk their lives to protect us every day."

Heaping praise on the military, he said: "Your selfless service is beyond measure," and further honoured his father's service: "Just as I honor my father, I keep all of you in my thoughts each and every day as we would not have the safety and freedoms we cherish without you. Thank You."

Newsmax commentator Todd Starnes joined critics of Strahan following an incident during a Fox NFL Sunday broadcast for Veterans Day, taking to social media with the claim: "Michael Strahan disrespected the military during a Veterans Day pre-game show on @NFLonFOX.

Starnes went on to lambast Strahan: "The great irony is Strahan on a ship surrounded by men and women who would willingly sacrifice their lives to protect his freedom. So, his behavior is not just repugnant, it's downright cowardly."

Additionally, outraged views were aired on X, as one supporter wrote: "What the hell is wrong with Michael Strahan! ? On effing Veterans Day! Boo, @NFL. Boo, @NFLonFOX. Not cool,"

There were calls for his job, as another added: "Fire Michael Strahan! This is unacceptable!"

A third said: "@NFLonFOX Michael Strahan, standing with US military honoring Veterans Day can't show honor and respect during the National Anthem... Wow!"

Tom Brady delivered a heartfelt monologue dedicated to veterans and servicemen and women: "We really honour you today in the NFL. You men and women who are serving us around the world, you're our heroes. You have our respect. You have the best team in the world - and I've seen some great teams.

"But there's no greater team in the world than our military and our armed forces. We admire your commitment. We admire your dedication. We admired your sacrifice. So enjoy today. We as the NFL, we honour you. We love you. And thank you so much."
