was left baffled by his engineers' indecision during the , telling Riccardo Adami and his garage to 'have a tea break' while they decided whether or not to invert their cars. The legendary Brit was running in eighth place, behind team-mate Charles Leclerc, but Hamilton was enjoying medium-compound rubber, compared to the hards bolted onto the No.16 machine.
Stuck behind his Ferrari colleague with Kimi Antonelli in his sights up the road, the seven-time world champion started to become audibly frustrated. "I'm just burning up my tyres behind him," he protested to Adami. "You want me to just sit here the whole race?"
A couple of laps later, Hamilton reiterated his request, but was told: "We want to keep the DRS to Charles. Go ahead like this." The 40-year-old replied: "Man, you guys! This is not good teamwork. That's all I'm going to say!"
He went on to bring up the Chinese Grand Prix, where he offered to let Leclerc overtake him to utilise his extra pace. "In China, I got out of the way when you were on a different strategy," he said, before chiming in: "Have a tea break while you're at it."
Hamilton was eventually unleashed to hunt down Antonelli ahead, but after making some initial inroads, the Brit's lap times drifted, and the rate of progress slowed. Ferrari then decided to swap the cars back again, but Leclerc was also unable to make an overtake stick.
Instead, Hamilton was forced to look in his mirrors on the final lap as Carlos Sainz closed in. The Spaniard made an audacious lunge down the inside into the sector three hairpin, banging wheels with the Brit in the process, but the Ferrari man held on to deliver an eighth-place finish.
While there was drama in the Ferrari camp, there was none in the McLaren garage. Oscar Piastri led home a one-two for the team, scoring his third consecutive victory and extending his championship lead to 16 points ahead of the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix.
"It's incredible the hard work from the team," the race winner said. "Two years ago at Miami we were the slowest team. I think we were lapped twice. Now to have won the Grand Prix by over 35 seconds to third is an unbelievable result."
