James Corden revealed a heartbreaking confession when he finished filming the third series of Gavin and Stacey in 2010. The English comedian, who starred in the beloved sitcom as Smithy, was speaking at an event at the London Palladium to mark the release of the book When Gavin Met Stacey. Joined by co-writer and fellow star Ruth Jones, who played Nessa alongside him, Corden revealed that he was overcome with emotion when they wrapped up filming. At the time in 2010, there was no plan for Gavin and Stacey to return in the future. He recalled that he was crying in Ruth's arms, during what they thought was their last scene, saying, "I was so sad. It was really challenging - I didn't know anything."
He added, "We were so used to seeing each other each week. It was the most emotionally lost I ever felt. I remember I couldn't speak."
Gavin and Stacey first landed on our screens in 2007, and it recently came to an end with a special episode on Christmas Day last year.
Elsewhere, the pair confessed that they had planned for Gavin Shipman (Mathew Horne) to cheat on his wife, Stacey (Joanna Page), in the 2019 Christmas special, although the storyline was scrapped because it didn't feel "true" to the programme.
James said: "We had sort of a weird idea for the 2019 special, didn't we?" Ruth responded: "Oh, about Gavin having an affair."
Corden said: "Yeah, or that he wasn't having an affair, but there was someone at his work who he liked." Ruth Jones then added: "It just felt like it wasn't true to the show."
The duo also considered making the Gavin and Stacey finale into a film, but later abandoned the idea.
Ruth said: "With the second special - the finale - we did consider making that as a movie because we wanted to do something different from what we'd done before.
"But then when we read it, we went, no, it really belongs in people's living rooms on Christmas night, when everyone's eaten too much turkey and Chocolate Orange and they're sat with friends and family."
Gavin and Stacey: The Finale is available to stream on BBC iPlayer.
