Just an hour's flight from the UK, you could be exploring the historical and modern wonders of a charming Belgian gem.

Ghent, nestled in the heart of Belgium, is a small city boasting canals, Gothic architecture, cobblestone streets and a plethora of places to discover. Whether you're already visiting a neighbouring city or seeking a new adventure, Ghent offers the perfect getaway with minimal travel.

Recently, this enchanting city was recognised as one of the most welcoming on the Continent by Forbes and one of the most beautiful by World Wide Schooling. And there's plenty to keep you occupied.

Things to do in Ghent

Ghent's rich history has left a legacy of buildings that tell fascinating stories and inspire all who visit. One such landmark is the Gravensteen Castle, reports the Mirror.

Constructed in the 10th Century, it's the only castle in Europe located in a city centre. Over the centuries, it has served as a court, prison, torture site, textile factory and was even on the brink of demolition.

Not far from the castle, another key destination awaits. St Bavo's Cathedral towers over the city and houses the world-renowned Ghent Altarpiece, which has been captivating tourists since the 15th century.

Patershol, often featured on Instagram timelines, is a must-visit. Its medieval buildings, cobbled streets and tranquil canals create a fairy-tale-like charm.

Known for its narrow, winding streets, cobblestone pathways, and picturesque medieval houses, Patershol is one of the city's oldest and most authentic areas. It's home to numerous cafes, restaurants, independent shops and colourful facades.

Beyond its aesthetic appeal, Ghent boasts an enticing food scene worth exploring. From frites (Belgian fries) to local speciality chocolate and waffles, there's something sweet for savoury lovers and something savoury for those with a sweet tooth.

Don't miss out on Ghentse Neuzekes or 'Ghent noses'. These cone-shaped sweets have a tangy raspberry flavour and can be found in most local markets or speciality stores.

Getting there

Reaching Ghent from nearby cities is a breeze. A train journey from Brussels takes just 25-30 minutes, while from Bruges it's around 30 minutes.

For those travelling directly from the UK, flights to the nearest airport, Brussels, typically take just over an hour. Flights can cost as low as £44 from London Heathrow to Brussels, with the subsequent journey to Ghent achievable by either train or car.
