Enzo Maresca will need to solve a major dilemma at Chelsea between now and the start of next season. It has been a busy summer for the Blues, who have spent over £210million on new players since the start of the window. They have revamped their attack with the signings of Jamie Gittens, Liam Delap and Joao Pedro for a combined total of around £165m.
Teenage duo Kendry Paez and Estevao William will also provide quality up front while offering plenty of potential for the future. In defence, the arrival of Mamadou Sarr has boosted Chelsea's strength in depth while Dario Essugo will compete for minutes in the holding midfield role. However, there is one problem area which is yet to be properly addressed.
Chelsea have been widely tipped to sign a new goalkeeper but are yet to make any tangible progress on that front. They already have Robert Sanchez, Filip Jorgensen and Djordie Petrovic but all three players have struggled to prove themselves so far.
Sanchez was responsible for some high-profile errors last season and has not looked particularly assured during the Club World Cup. Jorgensen also failed to make a convincing case while Petrovic spent the campaign at sister club Strasbourg.
Chelsea tried to sign AC Milan stopper Mike Maignan earlier in the window but the move ultimately went up in smoke. The Blues were unwilling to meet the player's £25m price tag, which saw negotiations collapse.
They also considered sending Jorgensen on loan to Strasbourg, which suggests Maresca is not overly confident in his ability. However, according to L'Equipe, the 23-year-old refused to make the switch in spite of Chelsea's wishes.
It leaves Maresca with several important problems to solve ahead of the new Premier League campaign. For one, he will need to decide if he wants to target another goalkeeper or if he is happy to stick with the options he already has.
The future of Jorgensen will be another sticking point for the Blues, given that he does not appear to be in Maresca's plans for the upcoming season. With a loan move to Strasbourg out of the question, they will need to find somewhere else for him to go.
Petrovic, meanwhile, looks set to leave Chelsea with Bournemouth thought to be in advanced talks over a potential move. He is reportedly keen to leave Stamford Bridge this summer so that he can play regular football elsewhere.
If he ends up making the switch, it remains to be seen if Chelsea will decide to keep Jorgensen to provide additional cover. However, there is a chance that both players could leave if a new first-choice stopper arrives in west London.
There is still plenty of time for a deal to be engineered, but it would benefit the Blues to sort things out quickly with just over a month until the Premier League returns for another season.
