People who receive various benefits from the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) and HMRC may receive payments on a different date due to an upcoming Bank Holiday. The next Bank Holiday in England, Wales, and Northern Ireland is on Monday, August 25, meaning recipients of various forms of support such as Child Benefit payments and Universal Credit may receive the payments early.
Many businesses are closed on Bank Holidays including banks, and benefit offices, which means benefit payments due on that date are pushed forward. Payments for a number of benefits should instead appear in accounts on Friday, August 22.
DWP and HMRC benefit payments that might be affected include:
- Universal Credit
- State pension
- Pension credit
- Child benefit
- Disability living allowance
- Personal independence payment (PIP)
- Attendance allowance
- Carer's allowance
- Employment support allowance
- Income support
- Jobseeker's allowance
People who are paid monthly can work out when their next payment should arrive by counting four weeks forward from the last payment date and checking to see whether it falls on a Bank Holiday, as reported by Manchester Evening News.
Payment dates will revert to normal if they're shifted due to the Bank Holiday.
The gov.uk website explains that if "your payment date is on a weekend or a bank holiday you'll usually be paid on the working day before", but adds: "This may be different for Child Benefit."
You can find out more information on the gov.uk website here.
Payment date changes also impact the State Pension. The Basic State Pension normally arrives in your bank account every four weeks, with the exact date corresponding to the two digits of your National Insurance (NI) number.
Here are the dates you can normally expect to receive the funds based on these numbers.
- 00 to 19: Monday
- 20 to 39: Tuesday
- 40 to 59: Wednesday
- 60 to 79: Thursday
- 80 to 99: Friday
Even if you're impacted by the bank holiday, funds you receive will be as normal, though you will need to make the money last longer due to the slightly extended wait until your next payment.
If your benefit hasn't arrived on the day you expected it to, you can contact the DWP helpline on 0800 328 5644.
You won't be able to call on bank holidays, though you can ring the previous working day, or the day after the Bank Holiday.
There are three Bank Holidays left in England, Wales and Northern Ireland this year including August 25, the Summer Bank Holiday.
Meanwhile, Scotland has four more to look forward to.
