Kochi: The Malayalam film industry is in mourning following the death of Kaviyoor Ponnamma, widely regarded as the "screen mother" of the industry. She was laid to rest during a heartfelt farewell at her home in Alwaye on Saturday.

Many prominent figures, including superstars Mammootty, Mohanlal, and Suresh Gopi, came to pay their respects, joined by hundreds of other film personalities at a prayer meeting.

With a career spanning over six decades and more than 700 films, Ponnamma portrayed the roles of mother, grandmother, and mother-in-law to nearly every leading actor in Malayalam cinema. Following her passing, her body was transported from the hospital to an auditorium, where thousands gathered to honor her memory.

The funeral was attended by State Industries Minister P. Rajeeve, representing the Kerala government. Ponnamma received a state funeral, and her pyre was lit in her home compound.

The 75-year-old actress was known for her distinctive big red bindi and had been unwell for some time. She began her acting journey in Malayalam theater in the late 1950s before transitioning to films, quickly becoming the preferred choice for maternal roles.

Throughout her illustrious career, she played the role of a mother to legendary actors such as Sathyan, Prem Nazir, Mammootty, Mohanlal, Suresh Gopi, and Jayaram. She appeared in over 700 films, primarily in Malayalam, with her last performance in 2022. Following that, health issues confined her largely to her home.

Ponnamma's husband passed away in 2011, and she is survived by a daughter who lives in the United States. In recent weeks, her health had deteriorated, leading to a prolonged hospital stay.

Her memorable collaborations with Mohanlal, particularly in hits like "Thenmavin Kombathu" and "Kireedom," remain cherished by fans. The duo acted together in approximately 50 films.

Ponnamma received multiple accolades, including prestigious awards from the Kerala state government, and she was also well-known in the television industry.
