Recently, the Crime Branch team of Mumbai Police has arrested three smugglers who were smuggling whale vomit, i.e. ambergris. The Thane Police Office said that they received a tip-off about this matter on September 27, after which action was taken.

Secret information and arrest:  According to the Crime Branch, Assistant Police Sub Inspector Dattaram Bhosale of Thane Crime Branch received information that some people were going to come to Dombivali area at 2 pm in a car to sell ambergris. Based on this information, the police took immediate action and reached the spot and arrested three accused with ambergris.

What is ambergris and why is it special?:  Whale vomit, called "ambergris", is extremely rare and precious. It is formed in the intestines of the white whale and then the whale spits it out. Ambergris is used in making perfumes and other products. Its specialty is that it gets better over time as it floats in the sea, which increases its price.

Price of ambergris in the black market:  The price of ambergris depends on its quality, size and condition. One kilogram of it is sold for about Rs 5 to 6 crore in the black market. The reason for its high price is its rarity, as it is very difficult to find naturally.

Ambergris smuggling:  The high demand and price of ambergris has fueled its illegal trade. In many countries, whale hunting and trade in its products is banned by law. Therefore, smugglers sell it illegally. However, whales are not hunted, but ambergris is found naturally on the seashore. Nevertheless, its illegal smuggling has increased significantly, which keeps the police and wildlife conservation organizations on alert.
