China has confirmed an agreement with India to resolve the long-standing border standoff in eastern Ladakh, as reported on October 22. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian announced that both nations have been engaged in productive communication through diplomatic and military channels regarding their border issues.

“Now the two sides have reached a resolution on the relevant matters which China speaks highly of,” Jian said during a press conference in Beijing. He emphasized that China is committed to working with India to implement these resolutions, although he did not disclose specific details about the agreement.

On October 21, India also announced an agreement regarding patrolling along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in eastern Ladakh. This development is considered a significant breakthrough after more than four years of military standoff that began in June 2020.

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar confirmed on October 21 that the disengagement process with China has been completed. “We can say that the disengagement process with China has been completed… We will be able to do the patrolling which we were doing in 2020. I think it's a good development,” Jaishankar stated.

The agreement likely includes provisions for patrolling in the Depsang and Demchok areas. Relations between India and China have been strained since 2020 due to violent clashes that resulted in the deaths of 20 Indian soldiers and four Chinese soldiers in the Galwan Valley, marking the first fatal encounter between the two nations since 1975.

Historically, India and China fought a war in 1962, which ended in a significant defeat for India, complicating their ongoing disputes over territorial claims.
