Thailand Cambodia War: US President Donald Trump announced that the leaders of Thailand and Cambodia have agreed to immediate ceasefire talks after three days of deadly clashes on the border. More than 30 people have died in these clashes while more than 1.3 lakh people have been displaced. Trump, who was on a visit to Scotland, reacted to this war on Truth Social Post. The US President said that he spoke separately to Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet and Thailand's acting Prime Minister Phumtham Vechaychai. Trump warned both leaders that potential US trade agreements could be in danger if the conflict continues.

Donald Trump wrote on Truth Social, "Both sides want immediate ceasefire and peace." Referring to his efforts to resolve the conflict, he said that both countries are keen to resume trade talks. They want to move towards an agreement soon. Trump said, "They have agreed to hold an immediate meeting and ceasefire soon!" Phumtham conveys Thailand's desire for ceasefire

Phumtham acknowledged Thailand's willingness to seek a ceasefire but did not express full confidence in Cambodia. In a Facebook post, he urged Trump to convey Thailand's willingness to negotiate peace between the two sides to Cambodia. The recent violence is the most serious fighting between Thailand and Cambodia in a decade. On Saturday, clashes intensified in Thailand's Trat province and Cambodia's Pursat province, opening a new front 100 kilometers from the initial conflict zone.

Why is there tension between Thailand and Cambodia?

The conflict between the two countries began in late May after the death of a Cambodian soldier, leading to retaliatory military deployments by both countries along the 817-km-long disputed border. The dispute has long been over ancient temples, particularly the UNESCO-listed Preah Vihear temple, which was given to Cambodia in 1962 under a ruling by the International Court of Justice (ICJ), but Thailand has never fully accepted the decision.
