After India’s loss in the Leeds Test, criticism is pouring in—from bowling weaknesses to fielding errors. But former cricketer Aakash Chopra has highlighted an intriguing concern: Why was Jasprit Bumrah’s secret about playing only three Tests publicly revealed, potentially helping England prepare better?
What Did Aakash Chopra Say?Chopra questioned the rationale behind announcing Bumrah’s limited participation before the series even began. He asked during his YouTube Live session, “Why was it necessary to tell the world that Bumrah will play only three matches? Why not keep the playing eleven a secret, as is usually done?”
According to him, this leak might have given England an edge. Knowing Bumrah would only feature in limited matches, England could tailor pitches for the rest of the series to suit their strengths, weakening India’s bowling attack.
The Bigger Picture: Preparing the Next Generation of Fast BowlersChopra also pointed out the urgency for India to groom fresh fast bowling talent. With Bumrah’s workload being managed and Mohammed Shami nearing the twilight of his career, India needs new match-winners in pace bowling.
He said, “To win a Test match abroad, 20 wickets must be taken. While Shami and Siraj have been good alongside Bumrah, none have quite matched Bumrah’s impact yet.”
As the Test series moves forward, all eyes will be on India’s strategy, especially with the next match at Edgbaston starting July 2.
