In the ongoing tension between Israel and Iran, Western countries are trying to corner Israel in different ways. While the US is increasing the scope of sanctions on Iran, the Prime Minister of Sweden has demanded that Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard (IRGC) be declared a terrorist organization.

Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson on Sunday demanded that the Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard (IRGC) be declared a terrorist organization. Kristersson said, "We want Sweden to talk with other EU countries about the serious concerns related to the IRGC. This includes their destructive role in the Middle East and their increasing actions in various European countries."

According to a report by Expressen, the Swedish PM said that the only way to stop the IRGC is for the EU (European Union) to declare the IRGC a terrorist organization so that we can act against it more comprehensively than the sanctions already imposed.

After the hanging of Swedish-Iranian Habib Chaab (Asud), the Swedish Parliament voted in favor of declaring the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps a terrorist organization in May 2023. Now the Swedish Prime Minister has reiterated this demand with the European Union.

The demand has already been raised.

In January 2024, the European Parliament recommended the EU to list the IRGC as a terrorist organization following allegations of suppressing protests in Iran and helping Russia in the Ukraine war.

EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell said in Brussels on January 23 that there are legal reasons why the EU cannot put the organization on the terrorism list. This is something that cannot be decided without a court, and the IRGC will have to wait for a court decision first to be put on this list.

IRGC Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps

Iran formed the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps after the Islamic Revolution of 1979. It is considered more powerful than the Iranian army. The IRGC has been formed to protect the Islamic revolution and spread its ideology across the world. Its leadership is in the hands of Iran's Supreme Leader.

Western countries allege that the IRGC trains and funds Iran-backed militias and runs missions around the world.
