Prince Harry's breakdown with King Charles as he accepts 'family will never forgive him'

Prince Harry's broken relationship with has reached a new low, as the claims his father "refuses to speak" to him.

After deciding to step down as a working royal in 2020, the started a new life in California with his wife, Meghan, and their two children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet - and his bond with his father strained over the years as they spent time apart.

In a new interview with the , the Duke of Sussex has opened up about his estrangement, revealing that he’d like a “reconciliation” with fellow members of the . The emotional talk, which came after , touched on how the legal challenge had affected his relationship with the King.

The Duke of Sussex had appealed against the dismissal of his High Court claim against the Home Office over the decision of the Executive Committee for the Protection of Royalty and Public Figures (Ravec) that he should receive a different degree of protection when in the UK. However, in a ruling handed down this afternoon, Sir Geoffrey Vos, Lord Justice Bean and Lord Justice Edis dismissed Harry’s appeal.

Speaking to the following the decision, the Duke said: “He won't speak to me because of this security stuff.” He added that he didn't know how long his father had left to live.

When discussing a possible reconciliation, he added: “Of course some members of my family will never forgive me for writing a book, of course they will never forgive me for lots of things, but I would love reconciliation with my family. There's no point in continuing to fight anymore."

Since Harry and wife Meghan sensationally quit royal life more than five years ago, the pair have called California their home, and Harry has only returned to the UK on a number of occasions – including for the funeral of the late in April 2021. In his best-selling memoir Spare, , he, his father and brother came together to discuss things.

After opening up about his feelings to the pair, Harry claimed he felt “cut off” and that a heated argument ensued between him and William. According to the Duke, King Charles intervened between him and his brother, saying: “Please, boys - don't make my final years a misery.”

While Harry now lives in Montecito, after news of King Charles’ cancer diagnosis broke last year, the Duke , with many hoping it would begin the process of reconciliation. However, this meeting marked the last time the pair saw one another, meaning they have not seen each other face-to-face for more than a year.

Amid the monarch’s cancer diagnosis, it's previously been reported that has been left in the dark regarding the status of his father’s health. When the monarch had a short stay in hospital earlier this year after suffering side effects from his cancer treatment, it was alleged that the Duke of Sussex found out about it on the news like everyone else.

According to magazine, Harry has not been told about his father's current condition or prognosis, with a source claiming that . A palace source said: “I don’t think there is any rapprochement”, while another added: “They are distant”.

With Prince Harry and Charles’ relationship appearing to remain strained, - as well as to his youngest son. “He always loved Harry – he called him 'darling boy'. And I’m sure he still does love Harry and would love even more to be able to spend time with Archie and Lilibet,” she told The .

“Charles is a sentimental man and a doting grandfather to George, Charlotte and Louis. And I’m sure as his struggle with cancer continues, he thinks more about the great loss of not being able to spend time with Harry’s children.”

And it's not just Charles who looks set to miss out as Prince Harry and William are not believed to have talked in years. “I always imagined Harry and William remaining close and enjoying watching their children grow up together,” Jennie added.

“And I guess there must be times when they both think the same. But there is absolutely no sign of the cousins ever getting to know one another.”
