A disturbing incident of caste-based violence has emerged from Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh. On May 9, a Dalit family invited to a wedding feast in Dudhai village was assaulted for merely touching the food. The attackers belonged to the Rajbhar community.
According to the complaint, Dinanath, a Dalit youth, attended the wedding at Lalji’s house with his family after receiving an invitation. When Dinanath took a plate of food, some Rajbhar men—Sonu, Ramchandra, and Bhim—stopped him, questioning how he dared to touch the food. They verbally abused Dinanath and his family and forced them to leave.
Later that night, the accused men, along with others, came to the Dalit family’s home armed with sticks and knives. They violently attacked the family members, including women, injuring six people.
The police have registered a case against 11 accused and are currently investigating the matter.
