5 crore rupees in cash, 1.5 kg of gold, and foreign liquor... what was recovered from the DIG's hideout on bribery charges?

The CBI took action against Harcharan Singh Bhullar, DIG of the Ropar Range of the Punjab Police, on bribery charges. During raids at the DIG's home and premises, the team recovered crores of rupees in cash, foreign liquor, and luxury goods.

The CBI has arrested Punjab Police's Ropar Range DIG Harcharan Singh Bhullar and a private individual in connection with a bribery case involving ₹8 lakh. The arrested officer is a 2009 batch IPS officer and was currently serving as the Ropar Range DIG. The CBI seized several luxury items during raids at the DIG's home and other premises.

According to the CBI, the DIG is accused of demanding a bribe of ₹8 lakh from a businessman in exchange for settling an FIR against him and not taking any further police action. He was also demanding illegal monthly payments.

The CBI orchestrated a plot to catch the DIG red-handed.

 

The CBI registered a case on October 16th after receiving the complaint. A trap was laid in Sector 21, Chandigarh, and the accused's middleman was caught red-handed accepting ₹8 lakh. The CBI stated that during the trap, the complainant made a controlled call to the DIG, in which the officer admitted receiving the money and summoned the middleman and complainant to his office. The CBI team then arrested the DIG from his office. 

 

During the raid, the CBI recovered huge amounts of cash and valuables from the DIG's homes and premises, including around Rs 5 crore in cash (counting is still ongoing), 1.5 kg of gold and jewellery, several documents related to properties in Punjab, keys of Mercedes and Audi cars, and 22 expensive watches. 

Bottles of foreign liquor and guns were also recovered.

Additionally, locker keys, 40 liters of bottles of foreign liquor, a double-barreled gun, a pistol, a revolver, and an airgun were recovered from the house and premises. The CBI also recovered 2.1 million rupees in cash from the middleman. Both accused have been arrested and will appear in court on October 17. The CBI stated that further searches and investigations are ongoing.
