Diabetes: Summer season is at its peak, and this season brings with it many new challenges. Especially for those who suffer from diabetes. When insulin does not work properly in the body or its quantity decreases, the risk of diabetes increases. If diabetes is not treated and the sugar level increases repeatedly, then the risk of heart disease, kidney failure, nerve problems, foot problems, and loss of eyesight increases.

Summer's high temperature, sweating, and dehydration can affect blood sugar levels. In such a situation, people who are already diabetic should pay special attention to their diet. Proper eating not only helps in controlling sugar but also keeps the body hydrated in summer. Let us know four such things that you can include in your diet to effectively control your sugar in summer.
1. Bitter gourd
Bitter gourd, often known for its bitterness, is very beneficial for diabetics. It contains an insulin-like compound called polypeptide-P which helps in keeping the sugar level balanced naturally. The good thing is that bitter gourd is easily available in the market during the summer season.
2. Cucumber
Cucumber is very beneficial for almost all people in summer. Cucumber contains plenty of water (about 95% water), which helps in keeping the body hydrated. Cucumber has a very low glycemic index (GI), so diabetic patients can also include it in their diet. It is also very low in calories and has a good amount of fiber. You can eat it as a salad, as a snack, or by mixing it in raita.
3. Jamun
Jamun is a delicious and healthy fruit found in summer. It is considered especially beneficial for diabetics. Jamun contains compounds called jambolin and jambusine which help in lowering blood sugar levels. It controls the rise in blood sugar by slowing down the process of converting starch into energy.

4. Curd/ buttermilk
Consumption of curd and buttermilk is very beneficial in summer. It is especially beneficial for diabetics. Curd is an excellent source of probiotics, which is beneficial for gut health. Curd slows down the problem of sudden increase in sugar levels after meals. Keep in mind not to consume sweet curd or buttermilk. Plain curd or spiced buttermilk (without sugar) is the best option for you.
