India’s festive journeys just got tastier. Swiggy has expanded its Food on Train service to more than 115 stations across 28 states and union territories. And it’s not just about convenience, this festive season, a new heartwarming ritual is emerging: families and friends using the “Order for Others” feature to send hot meals to loved ones travelling long hours by rail.
Swiggy’s Vice President of Food Strategy, Customer Experience & New Initiatives, Deepak Maloo, said in the company’s announcement that passengers no longer need to rely solely on pantry cars or hurried snack grabs during brief station halts.
Maloo added that the “Order for Others” feature has turned food into a way for families to share care and affection during journeys.
As per Swiggy, for decades, meal options on long-distance trains were limited to pantry services or crowded station stalls, which often struggled with freshness, hygiene, or variety. Swiggy says its service changes this by pairing local flavours with smart, PNR-based logistics, ensuring passengers get steaming hot meals between 6:00 am and 11:00 pm, even if their train halts for just a couple of minutes.
The expansion includes 15 newly added stations such as Madgaon, Mangalore Junction, Ernakulam Junction, Tirupati, Kurnool, Rajahmundry, Ahmednagar Junction, Rani Kamalapati Railway Station, Nagda Junction, Palanpur Junction, Chhapra Junction, Gonda Junction, Sawai Madhopur Junction, Jodhpur Junction, and Jalandhar. According to the company, this move ensures pilgrims, students, and families across temple towns, college hubs, and tourist destinations can all access better food options while on the move.
Interestingly, Swiggy shared that nearly 14 percent of all Food on Train orders already come through the “Order for Others” option. Lunch is proving the most popular slot, with comforting dishes like vegetarian thalis, rice bowls, sandwiches, and fruit plates topping the charts. Data shows cities such as Vijayawada, Salem, Warangal, Nagpur, Thrissur, and Nellore together contribute almost 20 percent of these orders, proof that the trend has caught on well beyond metro travellers.
Swiggy’s festive plans don’t stop at expansion. The company said it is curating regional delicacies that let passengers taste the spirit of the region without leaving their seats. From Malvani fish curry along the Konkan route, Kerala Sadya in Kochi, and Mangalorean gravies, to Goan rice plates, Gujarati thalis, and Rajasthani royal spreads—each journey becomes a culinary trail on wheels.
