Ekadashi, observed twice every Hindu lunar month, is a spiritually significant day dedicated to Lord Vishnu. Falling on the 11th day (Ekadashi Tithi) of both the waxing (Shukla Paksha) and waning (Krishna Paksha) moon phases, it is marked by fasting, prayers, and devotional practices aimed at purification of the mind and body.
In July 2025, devotees will observe two major Ekadashis: Devshayani Ekadashi and Kamikā Ekadashi. Each carries deep religious and seasonal significance, especially in the context of Chaturmas, the holy four-month period of spiritual discipline.
1. Devshayani Ekadashi (Shayani Ekadashi / Ashadhi Ekadashi)
Date: Sunday, July 6, 2025
Tithi Begins: 6:58 PM on Saturday, July 5
Tithi Ends: 9:14 PM on Sunday, July 6
Significance
Devshayani Ekadashi, also known as Ashadhi Ekadashi in Maharashtra, marks the beginning of Chaturmas, the four holy months during which Lord Vishnu is believed to go into cosmic slumber. This period is especially significant for Vaishnavas, saints, and spiritual seekers.
It is believed that Lord Vishnu rests on the cosmic serpent Shesha in the Ksheer Sagar (ocean of milk).
Marriages and major ceremonies are generally avoided during Chaturmas.
In Maharashtra, it coincides with the grand Pandharpur Yatra to the Vithoba temple.
Rituals
Devotees observe a strict fast (Nirjala or Phalahari).
Early morning bath, preferably in holy rivers.
Offer tulsi leaves, flowers, incense, and lamps to Lord Vishnu.
Chant Vishnu Sahasranama and participate in Bhajans or kirtans.
Spiritual activities like charity, japa, and scriptural reading are encouraged.
2. Kamikā Ekadashi
Date: Sunday, July 20, 2025
Tithi Begins: 12:13 PM on Sunday, July 20
Tithi Ends: 9:39 AM on Monday, July 21
Significance
Kamikā Ekadashi falls during the Krishna Paksha of the Shravan month and is considered one of the most fruitful Ekadashis. It is said that even hearing or reading about this Ekadashi bestows spiritual merit and helps eliminate sins.
According to the Brahma Vaivarta Purana, observing this fast is equal to performing various Yagnas. Worshipping Tulsi Mata and Lord Vishnu on this day brings immense blessings and peace.
Spiritual Importance of Ekadashi
Fasting on Ekadashi is not just a religious tradition but a spiritual detox. It helps:
Cleanse the digestive system and body toxins.
Calm the mind and reduce desires.
Enhance spiritual growth and self-discipline.
Promote sattvic living and devotion to God.
