People in Delhi can expect some relief from the summer heat over the next few days, with the India Meteorological Department ( IMD) forecasting light rain, thunderstorms, and cooler-than-usual temperatures.
On Friday, 23 May, the IMD has predicted a “partly cloudy sky” with “very light rain to light rain accompanied with thunderstorm/lightning and gusty winds”. Wind speeds could touch 50 kmph during thunderstorms, along with “dust rising surface winds towards evening/night”. The maximum temperature is expected to stay between 37°C and 39°C, slightly below normal by 1°C to 3°C.
Winds will mostly come from the southeast direction, starting with speeds of less than 16 kmph during the day and increasing to less than 20 kmph by night.
On Saturday, 24 May, similar weather is expected. The sky will remain partly cloudy with chances of “very light rain to light rain accompanied with thunderstorm/lightning and gusty winds”, with peak wind speeds again reaching up to 50 kmph. Temperatures are likely to range between 36°C to 38°C during the day and 25°C to 27°C at night. The IMD notes the maximum temperature will be “below normal up to 2 – 4°C”, while the minimum will be near normal.
Winds will continue to blow from the southeast, starting at 15-20 kmph in the morning, dropping slightly in the afternoon, and picking up again by evening.
Slight Rise in Temperature by Sunday
On Sunday, 25 May, the sky will stay partly cloudy with a “possibility of thundery development”. Day temperatures will remain between 36°C and 38°C, and night temperatures will rise a bit to 26°C to 28°C. The IMD mentions that the minimum temperature will be “above normal up to 1 – 2°C”, and the maximum will still be “below normal up to 2 – 4°C”.
Wind speeds will remain under 20 kmph in the morning, slightly decreasing in the afternoon and evening.
By Monday, 26 May, temperatures will start rising again. The day’s maximum is expected to be between 39°C and 41°C, with a minimum between 27°C and 29°C. While the day heat will be “near normal”, the minimum temperature will be “above normal up to 1 – 3°C”.
Winds will be lighter, generally under 15 kmph in the morning and gradually changing direction from southeast to south by afternoon. They are expected to pick up slightly again in the evening.
With changing conditions and increased wind speeds, Delhiites are advised to stay updated on local forecasts, especially if stepping out during evenings when gusty winds and thunderstorms are more likely.
