Can PM Modi make a difference? CNN host Fareed Zakaria explores India's potential role in Ukraine peace talks

Send Push
In a recent interview with India Today, Indian-American journalist and CNN host Fareed Zakaria suggested that Prime Minister Narendra Modi could play a vital role in mediating the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine. Zakaria pointed out that “the war in Ukraine is frozen,” highlighting that few global leaders have the credibility needed to engage both sides effectively. He stated, “If Prime Minister Modi were to propose some kind of situation where he acts as an intermediary, I think he could play a very constructive role… I believe Modi even more than Erdogan.”

India's Diplomatic Credibility
Zakaria underscored the limited number of leaders who can communicate with both Russia and Ukraine, naming only Erdogan and Modi. He acknowledged that while India usually maintains a neutral stance in foreign affairs, it has the capacity to take on a “very viable and constructive role” if it chooses to engage actively. Zakaria remarked that such a diplomatic initiative could not only enhance global diplomacy but also elevate India's status internationally.

Opportunity for Global Statesmanship
The ongoing conflict provides a unique opportunity for PM Modi to emerge as a “global statesman.” Zakaria stressed that this role would require Modi to embrace the challenging position of an “honest broker.” He cautioned that this role often comes with difficulties and criticism but could ultimately position India as a key player in global peace efforts.

Recent Diplomatic Engagements by India
PM Modi has taken significant steps toward engaging with both parties in the conflict. In June, he met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy at the G7 Summit in Japan, where he expressed India’s humanitarian support for Ukraine and emphasized the need for dialogue and peace. Modi stated that India was ready to be part of the solution rather than merely a bystander.

In August, Modi made a landmark visit to Kyiv, where he met with Zelenskyy and offered to assist in bringing peace to Ukraine “as a friend.” These diplomatic overtures indicate India's willingness to take on a more active role in international affairs.

Fareed Zakaria concluded that the current geopolitical climate presents Prime Minister Modi with a significant opportunity to leverage his diplomatic skills and position. He believes that Modi's potential to mediate in the Russia-Ukraine conflict could enhance India’s role on the global stage. By acting as an intermediary, Modi could not only contribute to peace efforts but also reinforce India's standing in the international community.
