'Blue Bloods' cancellation hits Tom Selleck hard: Frustrated star says 'I feel taken for granted'

Tom Selleck is grappling with the impending end of " Blue Bloods," a show that has been a staple of his career for 14 years. In an interview with TV Insider, he expressed his disappointment about the show's cancellation, stating, "I’m kind of frustrated. During those last eight shows, I haven’t wanted to talk about an ending for ‘Blue Bloods’ but about it still being wildly successful."

The show, which has consistently ranked highly in television ratings, was listed as number nine out of 100 in the Top 100 Shows of 2023-2024, placing sixth when excluding sports-related broadcasts.

A Show That Surprised the Network
Selleck's frustration stems from the perception that the show's success was often overlooked. "I don’t believe in holding grudges, but if you were to say to the television network, ‘Here’s a show you can program in the worst time slot you got, and it is going to guarantee you winning Friday night for the next 15 years,’ it would be almost impossible to believe," he said.

Despite the show’s popularity, which averaged over 12.5 million viewers in its first season and peaked with 14.07 million viewers in its seventh season, CBS decided to conclude the series.

"Blue Bloods" has been one of the few shows to last over 250 episodes, often outperforming expectations in a time slot considered challenging for television ratings. Selleck articulated his perspective, saying, "My frustration is the show was always taken for granted because it performed from the get-go. So how do I feel? It’s going to take a long time to sort all of this out."

The cancellation has personal implications for Selleck as well. In a previous interview with "CBS Mornings," he mentioned potential financial challenges, noting that he may have to give up his 63-acre ranch in Ventura County, California, if his acting career does not continue to thrive. He acquired the ranch in 1988 after his time on "Magnum, P.I." and has since focused on rebuilding it. Reflecting on his situation, he remarked, "If I stopped working, yeah. Am I set for life? Yeah, but maybe not on a 63-acre ranch!"

The Legacy of "Blue Bloods"
Selleck’s emotional connection to the show and his reflections on its cancellation highlight the challenges of leaving behind a beloved role. His journey in Hollywood has spanned decades, and "Blue Bloods" has played a significant role in shaping his legacy.

As fans prepare to watch the final eight episodes, "Blue Bloods" will return on CBS on October 18, 2024, at 9:00 p.m. ET, concluding a series that has captured the hearts of many viewers. Despite the end of the show, its impact on television drama will be felt long after the final credits roll.
