Television star Shubhangi Atre, widely recognized for portraying Angoori Bhabhi in the popular sitcom Bhabiji Ghar Par Hain!, is currently coping with the emotional weight of her former husband Piyush Poorey’s passing. As per recent updates, Piyush, who was battling ill health, passed away barely two months after their divorce.
Shubhangi confirmed the heartbreaking news in a conversation with The Times of India, expressing her sorrow and requesting privacy. “Your compassion at this moment means a lot to me. I ask for a little space before I can speak further,” she said, choosing to process her grief quietly.
A person close to Shubhangi shared that there had been no communication between the actress and her ex-husband at the time of his demise. “She is grieving deeply. Despite the situation, she resumed filming for Bhabiji Ghar Par Hain! the very next day, on Sunday,” the source revealed.
Shubhangi and Piyush entered into matrimony in 2003, and their daughter Ashi was born in 2006. Their marital journey lasted over 20 years, but they officially ended their relationship with a divorce on February 5, 2025.
In a prior interview with TOI, Shubhangi had acknowledged the vital role her ex-husband played in the early stages of her acting journey. “We were living in Pune at the time, and Piyush was employed at an advertising agency. For the first year after our daughter was born, I was a full-time mother. Once she grew a little older, I began auditioning. When I landed roles in shows like Kasautii Zindagii Kay and Kasturi, he left his job to support me. Later, once things became more stable, he returned to work.”
Shubhangi had earlier spoken with Bombay Times about the emotional strain that accompanied the breakdown of their relationship. “It was incredibly difficult. I had invested myself wholeheartedly. But eventually, we grew apart and faced differences we simply couldn’t overcome.”
She added, “Now that I’ve moved beyond that phase of my life, there’s a sense of emotional relief. It’s like a weight has been lifted. My priority now is to raise my daughter in a nurturing, joyful, and secure environment.”
She also revealed that they had been living separately nearly a year before their legal split. Despite attempting to salvage their bond, both eventually recognized that reconciliation wasn’t possible.
A report from Moneycontrol confirmed that liver cirrhosis was the underlying cause of Piyush’s death.
