In a significant push to strengthen infrastructure and uplift remote regions, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has welcomed the Union Cabinet’s approval of key railway and rural development initiatives. The green light has been given to four major multi-tracking railway projects and the second phase of the Vibrant Villages Programme, with a combined investment of over ₹25,000 crore. These measures aim to expand railway capacity across three Indian states and improve quality of life in strategic border areas, enhancing connectivity, economic activity, and national security.
The four railway projects, sanctioned at a total cost of ₹18,658 crore, will span approximately 1,247 kilometers and cover 15 districts across Maharashtra, Odisha, and Chhattisgarh. According to the government, the new tracks will significantly increase the Indian Railways’ carrying capacity, reduce congestion, and improve the efficiency of freight and passenger services. Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized that this expansion would not only enhance travel convenience but also bring down logistics costs and make supply chains more robust, ultimately supporting India’s broader economic ambitions.
Rail Network Expansion Across Three States
These new railway lines are expected to play a pivotal role in facilitating smoother transportation of goods and people in the region, particularly in mineral-rich and industrial belts. Maharashtra, Odisha, and Chhattisgarh will see increased network coverage that is vital for the seamless movement of raw materials, industrial products, and agricultural produce. By easing pressure on existing lines, the projects will also improve safety and punctuality of trains.
The initiative aligns with the government’s vision of modernizing India’s transportation infrastructure, especially in regions that have witnessed underdevelopment. The investment will generate local employment during the construction phase and is expected to stimulate regional economies by improving market access and attracting further private and public investment.
Empowering Border Villages Under Vibrant Villages Programme-II
Alongside the railway developments, the Cabinet has approved Phase II of the Vibrant Villages Programme with a total outlay of ₹6,839 crore. This initiative will be implemented across 19 strategic regions, including Arunachal Pradesh, Ladakh, Uttarakhand, and other sensitive border states. It aims to enhance the standard of living in remote villages through better housing, roads, education, and livelihood opportunities.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi stated that the expansion of the programme’s coverage compared to its first phase will bring meaningful change to communities often overlooked. By integrating these villages more closely with the national framework, the government also hopes to strengthen internal security by encouraging local participation in border safety efforts.
