East Medinipur (West Bengal) [India], April 15 (ANI): After the violence in Murshidabad over the Waqf Amendment Act, West Bengal Leader of Opposition and BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari on Tuesday launched a sharp attack on the Mamata Banerjee government, alleging a complete breakdown of law and order.
Speaking to ANI, Adhikari called for a sustained deployment of central forces like the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and Border Security Force (BSF).
He also claimed that the West Bengal Police has turned into a "cadre" of the ruling TMC and vowed not to remain silent if the Hindu community is targeted.
"CRPF and BSF will have to stay there for a long time as the situation is very bad. Central forces will have to stay here with full power. West Bengal Police and the Mamata Banerjee government have failed. The central force will have to be deployed everywhere. Mamata Banerjee's Police has become TMC's cadre. If Hindus are attacked, I will not remain silent," the BJP leader said.
The violence in Murshidabad was sparked by protests against the Waqf Amendment Act, which has been a contentious issue in the region. The protests turned violent, resulting in the deaths of three people, injuries to several others, and widespread property damage.
The BJP has accused the Trinamool Congress (TMC) of supporting the protests and criticised TMC MP Bapi Halder for making threatening remarks against those protesting Waqf properties. Majumdar condemned Halder's comments, saying they incited violence and questioned the state police's inaction against the MP.
The West Bengal police on Monday said that the situation in the violence-hit areas of Murshidabad is normal and urged people not to believe any rumours.
Speaking over the current situation, ADG, South Bengal Police, Supratim Sarkar said, "The situation is normal now. Everyone is safe. The CRPF, state police, and joint forces are deployed. The DGP of West Bengal police himself was present at the Samsherganj police station. We request everyone not to go through rumours. We opened a control room. Anyone facing any issue can contact us at any time." (ANI)
