Report reveals 48% of diabetes searches online come from Gen Z

Diabetes is the silent killer and a significant health threat across the globe. According to a Lancet report, over 800 million adults are living with the condition, and the number has more than doubled since 1990. On the other hand, in recent times, diabetes is not only a concern for adults, but the risk is rapidly increasing among Generation Z.

On World Health Day, Practo, the health services platform, released data revealing a sharp rise in disease among the younger generation. According to the report, more people are now turning to digital platforms to proactively try to manage diabetes, and among this group, nearly 48 per cent of the searches came from the age group of 25-34 years, with Tier 2 cities.

Diabetes turned out to be a major concern in the tier 2 cities, which are showing the highest growth at 20 per cent YoY. Currently, "many Gen Z are experiencing sugar spikes and tend to have abnormal sugar levels. This could be because of factors such as poor diet, stress, and sedentary habits among the younger population,” says Dr Manjusha Agarwal, Senior Consultant Internal Medicine, Gleneagles Hospital Parel, Mumbai.

Gen Z reporting abnormal blood sugar levels: Know the reasons behind 

Youngsters aged 20-27 have abnormal blood sugar levels. It is concerning, as it reflects unhealthy patterns, but hopeful because awareness is the first step toward prevention. So, appropriate measures taken now can go a long way and ensure enhanced quality of life.

“Growing up in an online generation, Gen Z is well aware of multiple health risks and disorders. Gen Z are searching for diabetes-related tips because they’re becoming more aware of health risks. Their busy, screen-filled lives and unhealthy habits, like eating fast food and not exercising, make them more vulnerable to diabetes. Stress, lack of sleep, and poor eating habits can also raise the risk,” shares Dr. Rajiv Kovil, Head of Diabetology, Zandra Healthcare and Co-founder of Rang De Neela Initiative.

Preventive tips for diabetes in Gen Z

Gen Z is in a unique position to make informed changes early in life to prevent long-term complications such as heart attacks and kidney, liver, and gallbladder problems. Dr. Agarwal says, “To prevent diabetes, it is necessary to do regular physical activity, eat a balanced diet low in processed sugar, have routine health check-ups, and manage stress.”

It is imperative to opt for these consistent lifestyle changes today to be able to lower future health risks and empower the younger generation to lead healthier lives. “The issue with Gen Z is that they seek knowledge and information, but often the internet has unscreened information. Youngsters need to make informed choices when it comes to their health. Don’t take any health problems for granted,” adds Dr. Kovil.

How to Prevent Diabetes:

1. Healthy Eating: Choose fruits, veggies, lean proteins, and whole grains. Avoid sugary drinks and processed snacks.

2. Stay Active: Aim for 150 minutes of moderate exercise weekly, like walking or cycling.

3. Get Enough Sleep: Aim for 7–9 hours of quality sleep to keep blood sugar in check.

4. Manage Stress: Use relaxation techniques like deep breathing or yoga.

5. Regular Check-ups: Get health screenings to catch signs early.

6. If apps allowed for healthy food delivery or notified Gen Z about the risks of junk food, it would add to tremendous health literacy.
