Student dies in front of her horrified friends after eating sandwich on holiday in Italy

A holidaymaker tragically died after she suffered from an allergic reaction following suspected miscommunication with restaurant staff.

Avarie Anne Tierney, 21, from the US, was enjoying a trip with her pals in Rome, Italy, when tragedy struck. She was studying via an exchange programme and had ordered a from an eatery. According to reports, she unknowingly consumed cashew nuts and began to feel unwell. She realised that she was experiencing a and rushed to her accommodation to retrieve medication on April 2.

However, she is said to have only made it to the ground floor of the building when she collapsed. Avarie went into anaphylactic shock in front of her friends. They dialledservices who rushed to the scene.

Paramedics gave her two doses of cortisone and performed cardiac massages on the young woman for 30 minutes. Sadly, they were unable to save her life. The police are waiting for the results of an autopsy to confirm her exact cause of death.

Avarie was a student at the evangelical Biola University, in Los Angeles, California. She posted multiple photos of her visiting Rome’s hotspots on her page in the weeks leading up to her tragic .

As well as visiting landmarks such as the Colosseum, Tierney also attended an AS Roma football match at the Stadio Olimpico.

She loved the Italian capital so much she posted a sign that read “Rome Sweet Home.” She had been staying in Rome since the end of January.

Tributes have since poured in on social media. One person wrote under her latest photo: "I have just heard the notice and I can't believe it. I didn't know you but you didn't deserve that. Rest in peace." Another person commented: "This is unreal. I’m in disbelief."

Over in the UK, . Mia Shay St Hilaire was rushed to hospital after drinking a milkshake believed to have contained traces of nuts, at the Bermondsey’s Pop Inn Cafe. The 12-year-old sadly passed away in hospital.

Mia’s parents, Adrian and Chanel said: "We think of Mia every day and knowing her death could potentially have been prevented so simply, only adds to how heartbroken we are as a family.

"We hope this conviction and fine sends a loud message to businesses serving and drinks across the country, of the devastating consequences of failing to take food safety seriously.”
