Major Danny Welbeck update as former Arsenal star's horror injury left him needing oxygen

Former Arsenal striker Danny Welbeck was deemed fit enough to fly back with his Brighton & Hove Albion team-mates after suffering a worrying back injury against Newcastle United.

The 33-year-old was the Seagulls' match-winner at St James' Park on Saturday, firing past Nick Pope after a slick exchange with Georginio Rutter in the first half. However, his afternoon ended prematurely as he left the field on a stretcher and was administered gas and air after a coming-together with Magpies defender Fabian Schar.

Speaking after his side's win at St James' Park, Brighton boss Fabian Hurzeler admitted he was unable to provide an update on condition.

"No updates. I can't say any updates," said Hurzeler. "I think he got a knee in his lower back. Let's wait until later, until tomorrow, then we'll know more."

Later on Saturday night, though, Brighton revealed that despite being "bruised and battered", Welbeck had been given the all-clear to fly back to the South Coast on the team plane.

"Dat guy’s a bit bruised and battered, but the good news is our match-winner at St James’ Park, @DannyWelbeck, is on our @British_Airways flight home," read an update across the club's social media channels.
