Liverpool boss Arne Slot aims thinly veiled dig at Man Utd after Tottenham humbling

Send Push

Arne Slot has suggested that Manchester United are not a ‘top team’ after their humbling against Tottenham.

The Red Devils slumped to a miserable 3-0 defeat to the North London side on Sunday. It leaves them 13th in table after their joint-worst ever start in Premier League history.

And Liverpool boss Slot has appeared to stick the knife in after claiming that United are no longer one of the division’s top teams. Speaking in a press conference ahead of his side’s Champions League clash with Bologna, the Dutchman said: "One of the reasons why we can compete is because we have a lot of quality. I also see a lot of team cohesion in the team.

"If we score I also see the ones that don't play are really happy with us scoring and winning. Those are two really positive things. But I also see things we definitely have to improve if we want to stay where we are with the fixture list that's coming up.

"Like I said, every fixture is difficult in the Premier League but everybody tells me that a top league table team is a bit more difficult than a low league table team, which we can all understand and we haven't faced one of them yet.

"So we have to do things better, but one of the reasons why we can stay up there is because we have a lot of players with a lot of individual quality."

Slot has already taken on Liverpool’s fierce rivals United this season - and secured a dominant victory. The Reds won 3-0 at Old Trafford last month. Luis Diaz scored a first-half brace before Mohamed Salah rounded off the scoring after the break.

Speaking after his game-winning performance, Colombian winger Diaz said: “I’m very happy to score goals to help the team, The most important thing is that the team is doing so well, winning games and winning this important game. I’m looking forward to the rest. I’m so happy to perform so well, I want to keep this rhythm and help the team all the time.”

Liverpool will renew their rivalry with the Red Devils in January having only lost one Premier League game to United in the past five years. Away from their rivals, Liverpool will be aiming to extend their excellent run this week as they take on Bologna before this weekend’s clash with Crystal Palace.

United face a testing couple of fixtures. They take on Porto in the Europa League in midweek ahead of a clash with Crystal Palace.
