David Moyes aims dig at West Ham boss Julen Lopetegui after Chelsea thrashing

Send Push

Former West Ham United manager David Moyes pointed to the Hammers' previously-strong home record against Chelsea in criticising successor Julen Lopetegui's first game against the Blues.

West Ham have lost their first three home league games under Lopetegui - against Aston Villa, Manchester City and now Chelsea. Nicolas Jackson scored twice in the first half, with Cole Palmer rounding off the scoring early in the second period.

The Hammers had been unbeaten in their previous three home meetings with their London rivals, including a 3-1 win early last season. There was no repeat this time, though, with another comprehensive defeat to add to the Hammers' 5-0 loss at Stamford Bridge in May.

That May reverse spelled the end for Moyes, whose exit was confirmed the following day. The Scot didn't appear too impressed by his old employers' latest display, though.

"I thought it was a poor performance and they'll be disappointed, because we had a pretty good record against Chelsea at the London Stadium over the years," Moyes told beIN Sports. "We've had difficulties at Stamford Bridge but at home we've been pretty good against them."

West Ham had their moments, and some were left wondering what might have happened if a penalty appeal at 2-0 hadn't been waved away. Crysencio Summerville went down with Wesley Fofana in close attention, but referee Samuel Barrott ignored the hosts' appeals and VAR upheld his decision.

The defeat leaves West Ham with four points from their opening five games. Next up for them is a Carabao Cup match away at Liverpool, and captain Jarrod Bowen made it clear his team can't afford to be as sloppy as they were on Saturday lunchtime.

"We were never in the game which is an awful thing to say," Bowen told TNT Sports. "The goals that they scored were easy on our part - two gifts.

"You have to be switched on in every moment. On the pitch it felt quite easy to play through [us], a disappointing day all-round. Of course, as a player and captain you have to lead and rally everyone together. We gave them too much respect in the end.

"Disappointing day, we accept the defeat. The game is done and we put it to bed and see what we can improve on. Games are coming thick and fast to put it right. We still have a lot of games to go and that is a positive for us."

While Lopetegui has started poorly, it's been a different story for Chelsea counterpart Enzo Maresca. The Italian has overseen three away wins from three, and Chelsea are now unbeaten in their last six away league games stretching back to April.
