After indulging in a hearty portion of garlic bread, you might find yourself avoiding close conversations or reaching for your toothbrush to combat the lingering smell.
But there could be a simple solution sitting in your fridge right now: Greek yogurt. A study published in the journal 'Molecules' suggests that having a spoonful of yogurt after your meal could help prevent garlic breath altogether. The research, conducted by scientists at , found that natural yogurt can help neutralise the sulphur-based compounds that cause the unpleasant odour.
The team tested this by placing equal amounts of raw garlic in glass bottles and adding different yogurts. They found that yogurt was 99 percent effective at reducing the garlic compounds, particularly those high in protein and fat content. Dr Sheryl Barringer, the senior author of the study, said: "High protein is a very hot thing right now.
Generally people want to eat more protein," which may indirectly help with the garlic smell as well as making you feel fuller for longer. Intriguingly, the researchers discovered that fried garlic didn't have the same effect, as frying it significantly reduced the concentration of most odour-causing compounds.
These findings could potentially lead to the creation of new products designed to eliminate garlic breath, using fat and dairy proteins. The results suggest a potential follow-up experiment to test how effective yogurt is at reducing breath odour after eating garlic. In the meantime, Greek yogurt, which has a higher protein content than natural yogurt, might be the best way to fight garlic breath. Flavoured yogurts could also potentially work, especially if consumed shortly after a meal laden with garlic.
