Arsenal have Rodrygo transfer secret weapon after shock decision amid £75m deal

Real Madrid belatedly began pre-season training this week after playing in the Club World Cup.

Since their exit to Paris Saint-Germain in the semi-finals, winger Rodrygo has been the subject of significant speculation due to his lack of involvement in the United States.

The Brazil international was an unused substitute against the Champions League holders and made just a five-minute cameo during the knockout stages.

That was despite starting their opening game and assisting Gonzalo Garcia in the 1-1 draw with Al-Hilal. Brahim Diaz replaced Rodrygo midway through the second half, then lost his place in the team to Arda Guler.

However, the 24-year-old remains in Madrid despite links to several Premier League clubs, including Arsenal, Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur. Of those three, the Gunners now appear to have an advantage.

As the Spanish sports newspaper Marca reports, Rodrygo surprised everyone at the club's training complex in Valdebebas on their first day back by wearing the newest Adidas F50 boots despite being with Nike for over a decade. The forward had previously worn blackout and whiteout boots on occasion, sometimes a sign that a change is afoot.

Arsenal reunited with Adidas in 2019 after a quarter of a century with first Nike and, more recently, Puma. They extended their partnership three years ago through to 2030, a deal said to be worth £600 million that reputedly pays £75m per season, up from an initial £60million.

The Gunners are one of eight Premier League teams this season that are with Adidas. Aston Villa, Fulham, Leeds United, Liverpool, Manchester United, Newcastle United and Nottingham Forest are the others.

The only club of those credited with an interest in Rodrygo is Liverpool. Chelsea and Spurs being Nike clubs could give Arsenal an edge over their London rivals should the forward become available anytime this month.

Rodrygo hinted at a stay in Madrid, posting on his Instagram story a picture of the city with a white heart accompanying the snap.

It remains to be seen what happens for him at Real, with ESPN reporting that Xabi Alonso's side are not actively looking to sell the player but will listen to any offers should they materialise.
