This year, the auspicious occasion falls on a Tuesday, October 7, 2025, and will be celebrated with great enthusiasm across the nation. Both the Uttar Pradesh and Delhi governments have officially declared this day as a public holiday.
Public Holiday in Uttar Pradesh
The Uttar Pradesh government, led by Yogi Adityanath, has announced a statewide public holiday on October 7 to honor Maharishi Valmiki's birth anniversary. According to the official directive, all government offices, private entities, schools, colleges, and universities will remain closed on this day.
Valmiki Jayanti was previously included in the annual holiday schedule released by the government in December 2024, and the recent order serves to formally confirm this holiday.
In various cities across Uttar Pradesh, significant events will be organized to celebrate Valmiki Jayanti. Major cities like Lucknow, Varanasi, Prayagraj, and Kanpur will host processions, cultural programs, and tableaux. Additionally, awareness campaigns will be initiated to educate the public about Maharishi Valmiki's life and teachings.
Delhi Also Declares a Holiday
In a similar vein, the Delhi government has declared a public holiday on October 7 in recognition of Maharishi Valmiki's birth anniversary. This announcement was made by Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta last Sunday.
On this occasion, all educational institutions, including schools and colleges, will be closed in Delhi. Government and municipal offices will also observe the holiday. The capital will witness processions, devotional evenings, and cultural events to celebrate Maharishi Valmiki's legacy. Temples and community centers dedicated to Valmiki are being adorned, with devotees expected to gather in large numbers.
